Wondering what else you can do with your wine bottles besides recycling? Here's a ridiculously simple way to upcycle your wine bottles to create an eco-friendly plant watering system.

I love plants, but I can be a lazy, forgetful gardener. I start out with the best intentions, but over time I begin to forget to water my pot plants.
During winter, our outdoor plants and garden area is mostly self sufficient, relying mostly on rainfall, a little grey water and occasional watering. Once summer hits, it's really hard to get back into the habit of watering on such a regular basis.
The idea of installing an irrigation system gives me a headache, not to mention the logistics and maintenance of it all and trying to figure out how to set the timers.
Repurposing a wine bottle is such a simple solution and handy when heading off on a holiday for pots or garden plants.
You can use any bottle, and for smaller plants a beer or soft drink bottle would be ideal.
Step 1:
Drink the wine (or whatever it happens to be).
Step 2:
Rinse the bottle and fill right up to the brim
Step 3:
Quickly shove the end of the bottle several inches into the dirt.
This is now going to slowly drip feed water, keeping the soil hydrated and your plant happy.
Step 4:
Refill every 3-5 days depending on the water requirements of your plant and of course, the weather.
The plants I applied this to don't need a lot of watering, so a week (or maybe more) is plenty for most of the year. For thirstier plants you may want to stick to 3 days.
This wine bottle had the perfect label - this particular winery are working on sustainable practices and restoring wetlands and the natural environment through various projects so I thought this was very fitting.
