Living more eco-friendly does mean that a lot of my items at home are functional, rather than pretty to look at.

This is a great way to use up a jar or two from your collection and make a pretty AND functional item for the bathroom.

Epsom salts, also known as Magnesium Sulphate, helps relieve tired achy muscles. With the addition of lavender, this makes a lovely relaxing bath with no hidden nasties.

I prefer milder aromas, and have used essential oils sparingly, so this recipe is a good ratio if you're kids are likely to use it too.

As essential oils don't dissolve in water, don't ever add them directly to a bath.

I've used liquid coconut oil as a carrier oil, to ensure I don't have undiluted drops of oil on the surface of the water in the bath.

From start to finish, this will only take 5-10 minutes to do and makes a cute home made gift for anyone who loves baths.

Ingredients

1 cup of Epsom Salts

Several Drops of Food Colouring

1 Tbsp. of Liquid oil (coconut or cold pressed almond oil are best)

10-20 Drops of Lavender Essential Oil

A Jar with a tight fitting lid

How to make bath salts

Step 1.

Set aside 1/2 a cup of the Epsom salts if you plan to layer the pink and white salts as I did. You can choose any colour you like of course.

Step 2.

In a separate dish, blend a tablespoon of coconut oil, 10 drops of Lavender Essential Oil and a little food colouring.

Ensure you are using good quality essential oils and not synthetic copies which don't provide the same benefits.

Now, add this to 1/2 a cup of Epsom salts, and stir well until the colour looks even.

Step 3.

Using a tablespoon, layer each colour separately (Pink and white) into the jar you plan to keep it in.

I used an empty jar from my collection box in the pantry. (If you're looking for a simple method to remove jar labels, here's what I do)

This can be layered in straight stripes, or uneven layers as I did...whatever looks good to you.

Step 4.

Flatten on top and it's ready to add to your bath immediately (or given as a gift)!

Make sure to screw the lid on tight as bathroom moisture can make it harden up over time.

(If this does happen, use a butter knife to break it up, it wont effect the quality of your bath)

Have fun mixing your homemade bath salts. Remember, you can substitute with other essential oils.
